We Recap Fable : The Coolest Pirate Book

If you want to be magically transported to a rugged life on the open seas with the wind in your hair and a map in your hand, you HAVE to check out Fable. A new YA fantasy duology from New York Times bestselling author Adrienne Young. Seventeen-year-old Fable is a dredger—a freediver who excavates rare gemstones from the coral reefs that fill The Narrows. For the last four years, she’s been trying to get off the island of Jeval, find the father who abandoned her there and claim her dead mother’s place on his trading crew. But when she finally makes it off the island, she discovers it may have been the safest place for her. This book was on Anna’s “Must read books of 2021” list, and did not disappoint us.

The iconic writer Adrienne Young finds a way to use “cliches” in an original, non-cheesy way. Her words fit perfectly with Fable and her personality, which is a nice show of attention to detail that keeps you immersed in her world. The characters are totally captivating. Anna begins explaining how you are soon introduced to a male character who owns all the ships on Fable’s island. She was even hoping he could be a potential love interest… until he literally tries to have her murdered. Fable herself is a bare-foot beauty, who is constantly on the run and having to hide. Celine joked she was optimistic there would be one scene where she would finally get a pair of shoes… or a much-needed bath!

Fable has been on her island for the last four years, and has spent the last two years

The crew hates her at first, and baits her into diving 100 feet down into the ocean just for a stupid little coin. Fable, not one to back down from the challenge, emerges from the water bloody and battered — and with the coin. After that hazing, she earned her stripes and the crew mates’ respect. Note to self… if you ever find yourself a main character on a pirate ship, if you just take the bait and accept the haze you will get instant street cred (boat cred??).

An Amazon review on Fable by K. Caldwell said it best:

“Do you like pirates and adventures? Tales from the open seas? Buried treasure? Tales of found families or strong female leading characters? Do you enjoy a delicious slow burn, forbidden romance? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then “Fable” is a book you absolutely need to read sooner rather than later. From start to finish, “Fable” is an adventure. An adventure that I couldn’t wait to greedily read about and made me so sad when it ended. It’s full of twists and turns and a slow burn romance. I’ve never been a fan of the slow burn romance (nor the insta-love either; most of the stories seem forced and unbelievable), but with Fable and West, I am all for it . . . I will never stop saying good things about this book. It was so, so good and now I’m just sad it’s over”.
